Dionne Warwick is a five-time Grammy award-winning pop music icon. She’s also my favorite female vocalist of all time. The reason why is because she has one of the most beautiful, versatile and emotionally-charged voices in the history of music. She also has an expansive and diverse catalog of music that is compelling, satisfying and extraordinary.

While Dionne Warwick is best known for breathing life into the music of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, I prefer the latter half of her career when she worked with Clive Davis and Arista Records. During this time she recorded numerous stellar albums and worked with a string of legendary artists, including Barry Manilow, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, and Johnny Mathis, among others.

Dionne capped off her relationship with Arista by releasing Aquarela Do Brasil in 1994. This album was a labor of love for Dionne as it paid tribute to a country and culture she had come to love: Brazil. The final track listing for this record included 12 songs, both classic and current. Among them was one of Dionne’s finest recordings, the simply fantastic 10,000 Words.

Five songs didn’t make it on to Aquarela Do Brasil. Thankfully, more than two decades later, Dionne chose to dust off these songs and release them as a new EP entitled Tropical Love. This EP is appropriately titled as it features beautiful love songs – including two duets. While I love all of the songs on Tropical Love, my favorite among them is “Bridges (Travessia).”
