Review — Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition

Growing up, I had an Xbox 360. One of the biggest exclusives was Gears of War. Now that I have an Xbox Series X, I decided to check out Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox Game Pass. Read on for my thoughts.

Those of us who play video games are known for not completing them, either because they are too hard, too boring, or forgotten in favor of the luster of a new release that we can’t live without. Gears of War was one of those games for me. It was tough as nails, so I never beat the single-player campaign. I figured I’d right that wrong 16 years later.

On the eve of Gears of War’s 10th anniversary, the Ultimate Edition of the game was released for Xbox One and, eventually, Microsoft Windows. Painstakingly remastered in 1080P and modernized for Xbox One, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is packed full of new content including five campaign chapters never released on Xbox.

The original game was known for breaking new ground with its campaign that could be played solo or via local or online co-op. Teaming up with someone halfway across the world was wild back in the day, and it’s still just as compelling in this version.

The genre-defining multiplayer has been upgraded to 60 FPS. It includes all 19 original maps remastered and six competitive modes including new Team Death Match, updated King of the Hill, and a special 2v2 mode designed by the Gears community. It’ll keep you busy for hours on end.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a lengthy game that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. It’s an over-the-top thrill ride that celebrates the inception of a long-standing, influential franchise that is beloved by millions. Whether you’re new to Gears of War or nostalgic for the good old days, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a must play, especially on Xbox Game Pass.
