Having sunk hundreds of hours into various video games in The Elder Scrolls franchise, I’m a massive fan of this series. Therefore, I’m always looking for different ways to immerse myself in the world that is The Elder Scrolls, whether it be through the soundtracks, tabletop games, or novels. With this in mind, I was eager to read The Elder Scrolls — Zaneta’s Chronicles, Part One: Vvardenfell by A.L. Zuniga. This book is the first in a trilogy about a character named Zaneta, and it is set in The Elder Scrolls’ universe.
Here’s the official synopsis for this book:
Žaneta, an extraordinarily unique Khajiit living on the island of Vvardenfell, has her peaceful world turned upside down when her family—the most important part of her life—is violently attacked. With her husband murdered and her children missing, Žaneta makes the courageous decision to go after them herself. Traversing across a country full of political turmoil and on the brink of an unknown epidemic, Žaneta presses on to discover where her loved ones have been taken. Her magic, skills, and morals are pushed to their breaking point as she struggles to hang on to the very foundation of who she is. But when it comes to her children, she’ll do whatever it takes to find them—no matter the consequences.
For fans of The Elder Scrolls, you’ll be right at home with the different races and locales that are referenced throughout this novel. This mix of old and new made for an enjoyable reading experience, and at only 156 pages the story breezed by in an instant — whetting my appetite for the second and third installments in Zaneta’s Chronicles.
This book is available in print, eBook, and audiobook formats. I prefer eBooks and audiobooks, but choose whichever option you prefer. Regardless of format, I encourage fans of The Elder Scrolls to check this out. Even those not familiar with the series but who have an appreciation for fantasy will find this tale intriguing. The writing is solid, the characters are fleshed out, and the action is plentiful. It’s a good first outing in a trilogy I look forward to exploring even further.
