Released in 2021, George Carlin: Book Of Quotes (100+ Selected Quotes) is exactly what it says it is: a collection of George Carlin quotes. Is it worth listening to? Read on for my thoughts.
GEORGE CARLIN: BOOK OF QUOTES
ABOUT GEORGE CARLIN
George Denis Patrick Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, social critic, and author. Regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comics of all time, he was dubbed “the dean of counterculture comedians”. He was known for his dark comedy and reflections on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and taboo subjects. His “seven dirty words” routine was central to the 1978 United States Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a 5–4 decision affirmed the government’s power to censor indecent material on the public airwaves.
“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”
“There are three kinds of people: those who can count, and those who cannot.”
“Some people have no idea what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.”
“Don’t just teach your children to read… Teach them to question what they read. Teach them to question everything.”
“If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea…does that mean that 1 enjoys it?”
“In America, anyone can become president. That’s the problem.”
“Just cause you got the monkey off your back doesn’t mean the circus has left town.”
George Carlin: Book Of Quotes (100+ Selected Quotes) is not a good book by any measure. It comes off like a bootleg George Carlin book that was hastily made to profit off of this deceased comic’s legacy. To make matters worse, the audiobook narrator is god awful. His voice is irritating, and his delivery is atrocious. Not a shred of humor to be found. What’s more, several of the quotes included aren’t even from George Carlin; they’re generic pap that George never said or wrote, which is a clear indication of the lack of care and effort put into producing what can hardly be called a book. While I appreciate that Downpour has George Carlin: Book Of Quotes (100+ Selected Quotes) available, I can’t recommend it to anyone. This is one book you should avoid. There’s much better George Carlins books to be found elsewhere.
