Based on the blockbuster Xbox game, Gears of War: Jacinto’s Remnant is the stunning story of the men and women who stood between a planet and total destruction—and now have to face the consequences of their actions. I listened to the audiobook, available on Downpour, narrated by Nan McNamara, the voice actor who portrays Anya Stroud in the Gears of War games. Below is my review of this book. Enjoy!
Gears of War: Jacinto’s Remnant by Karen Traviss is an excellent continuation of the Gears of War series, taking place immediately after the events of the second game. The novel follows Delta Squad as they struggle to survive in the post-apocalyptic world of Sera, constantly threatened by the Locust Horde. As they fight to protect the human city of Jacinto, they are forced to confront their demons and the difficult choices they must make to ensure the survival of their species.
One of the strengths of this novel is its character development. The members of Delta Squad, such as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, are complex and multifaceted, each with their unique struggles and motivations. The author does an excellent job of delving into their backstories and exploring their relationships with each other, as well as with other characters in the book. The result is a cast of characters that feel real and relatable and whose struggles and triumphs are genuinely engaging.
The plot of Jacinto’s Remnant is also strong, providing a satisfying continuation of the series while introducing new elements and plotlines. The novel explores the inner workings of the Locust Horde, providing insights into their culture and motivations that were not present in the previous games. It also raises interesting questions about the nature of humanity and the choices that individuals and societies must make in the face of overwhelming adversity.
In addition to its strong character development and plot, Jacinto’s Remnant is well-written, with vivid descriptions and a compelling narrative style. The action scenes are intense and well-choreographed, and the dialogue is sharp and realistic. Overall, this novel is an excellent addition to the Gears of War series and a must-read for fans of the franchise.
