One of the first Barry Manilow albums I bought was Scores, featuring music from Copacabana: The Musical and Harmony. This album made me want to take singing lessons, and “Every Single Day” remains my favorite Manilow song. Having the opportunity, nearly 20 years later, to see this music come to life on a Broadway stage was an emotionally profound moment for me.
I was emotional watching Harmony during its opening week for three reasons: first, I was proud of Barry finally being able to bring his show to Broadway after trying to do so for decades; second, I know and love this music, so hearing it live and seeing how it evolved from album to stage was spectacular; and, third, the story taking place during the Holocaust made it inherently emotional, not to mention more relevant than ever.
One of the most impressive aspects of Harmony is the way it seamlessly blends humor and drama. The show is full of laugh-out-loud moments, but it also tackles complex and important themes, such as the rise of the Nazi party and the impact it had on the lives of the Comedian Harmonists. The show manages to strike a perfect balance between entertainment and education, making it an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience.
Harmony is the best musical I’ve seen this year. It is a must-see for anyone who loves musical theater and a beautiful and moving tribute to a group of talented musicians whose story deserves to be told. Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman have created something extraordinary, and I’m proud of them for achieving this momentous milestone in a way that has surpassed my wildest expectations. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to see this glorious show during its opening week on Broadway. Harmony will surely be remembered as one of the greatest musicals of our time, and everyone should see it.
