In Sorgho Squad: Chapter #1: From the Ruins Comes Jowar! by Nate Blum, we meet the somewhat eccentric Professor Sorgho, a man dedicated to addressing nutritional challenges and sustainability. His lifelong research has led him to discover a mysterious ancient super team, lost to the ages. Determined to help humanity, he isn’t afraid to pursue unconventional methods. With the support of his cohort, Alice Atlas, the professor believes this superpowered team can aid in his mission. As they race against time to reassemble the Sorgho Squad, they journey across the globe, with the fate of the planet and its diverse lifeforms hanging in the balance.

Blum’s graphic novel is reminiscent of the Captain Planet cartoon series from the early ’90s, which I loved watching as a child. However, Blum’s works provides a fresh, modern twist. While such creative endeavors can sometimes seem a bit hokey, there’s no denying their good intentions and valuable messages. Though the comic book is relatively short, it is filled with vibrant full-color illustrations and expansive ideas. Topics such as sustainability, hunger, and potential species extinction are even more relevant now than they were during Captain Planet’s time, and Blum presents them in a way that is captivating.

The impressive illustrations and well-developed characters of Sorgho Squad made it so I was invested in the story and wanted to learn more about their origins. Professor Sorgho and Alice Atlas are central to the narrative, but the tantalizing glimpse of Jowar sparks the imagination. The hope that Earth’s problems could be solved as easily as this heroic entity believes adds an optimistic touch to the story.

This is just the first chapter of a much larger work, leaving me eager to know what happens next. Blum hooked me from the start and kept me invested throughout the unfolding adventure. Will Professor Sorgho and Alice find the scattered members of the Sorgho Squad in time? Only future installments will tell, and I look forward to finding out.
