Experience Holiday Magic with A Christmas Story The Musical

Opening night at Walnut Street Theatre is always special, but this week’s premiere of A Christmas Story The Musical was downright magical. I had the pleasure of attending with my father-in-law, and together we were swept into Ralphie Parker’s 1940s Indiana world.

A Fresh Take on a Familiar Classic

I’ll admit something upfront: I’ve never been particularly attached to the original 1983 film A Christmas Story. I don’t love it, I don’t hate it—it’s just one of those holiday staples that’s always been around. But the musical? Spectacular. From the very first number, the show bursts with energy, humor, and heart.

The music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (yes, the duo behind Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman) elevate the story into something vibrant and joyous. Numbers like “It All Comes Down to Christmas” and “Ralphie to the Rescue!” had the audience clapping along, while the choreography by Richard Stafford filled the stage with dazzling movement.

Humor, Heart, and Holiday Magic

The production captures all the quirky moments fans expect—the leg lamp, the pink bunny pajamas, the infamous flagpole dare—but it does so with a theatrical flair that makes them feel fresh. The humor lands perfectly, and the heartfelt moments remind us why this story has endured for decades.

Standout Performances

While the entire cast delivered strong performances, two elements stole the show for me:

  • Fran Prisco as The Old Man: His comedic timing and warmth brought Ralphie’s father to life in a way that was both hilarious and touching. Every scene he was in drew big laughs and genuine affection from the audience.
  • The live dogs: Yes, Gus and Jethro, courtesy of William Perloni Theatrical Animals, were scene-stealers. Their antics during the turkey-stealing sequence had the crowd roaring with laughter.

Final Thoughts

Seeing A Christmas Story The Musical on opening night was a fabulous experience. The Walnut Street Theatre has once again proven why it’s Philadelphia’s most beloved stage. With exceptional music, show-stopping dance numbers, and humor that hits just right, this production is a holiday gift worth unwrapping.

If you’re looking for festive fun this season, grab your tickets and join Ralphie on his quest for that Red Ryder BB Gun. You’ll leave with a smile, a laugh, and maybe even a little holiday nostalgia.

Performances run through January 4, 2026, at Walnut Street Theatre.
