There are few names in rock history as synonymous with the “power ballad” and anthemic songwriting as Jonathan Cain. As a long-standing member of Journey and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Cain has provided the soundtrack to our lives for decades. But while many know him for the soaring synths of “Separate Ways” or the timeless piano of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” his solo work has been quietly building a legacy of its own.
On February 27, Cain added another chapter to that story with the release of his new EP, Only A Prayer Away, available now through The Fuel Music.
Six Tracks of Expert Musicianship
The EP features six infectious songs that serve as a masterclass in songwriting. It is replete with the expert musicianship that Jon is known for—specifically that signature, emotive piano playing that can make a stadium feel like an intimate living room.
While the themes of the EP are rooted in Cain’s personal faith, the production and melody here have a universal quality that transcends labels. Whether you’re a Christian, an atheist, or anything in between, the superb music on this EP should be enjoyed by all because it’s simply that good. The arrangements are lush, the mixing (by David Kalmusky) is pristine, and the heart behind the notes is undeniable.
Music Born from Action
What makes Only A Prayer Away particularly compelling is its origin. These aren’t just studio creations; they are Cain’s musical responses to real-world “faith in action.”
- “Amen To The Rescue”: Written in a helicopter after Cain witnessed the resilience of the people in Chimney Rock, NC, following the devastating Hurricane Helene floods.
- “Imagine Peace”: A song performed for global leaders during “Peace On The Peninsula” talks in Seoul, South Korea.
- “Only A Prayer Away”: The title track is inspired by Pastor Greg Laurie’s teachings.
A Prolific Solo Journey
While Journey remains a global juggernaut, Jon has had an incredibly prolific solo career, especially in recent years. Since 2016, he has released a steady stream of albums, including What God Wants To Hear, Arise, and Piano Worship. This new EP marks his first set of solo songs in nearly four years, proving that his creative well is far from dry.
Even as he takes part in Journey’s massive “Final Frontier Tour 2026,” Cain continues to find time to share his personal testimony through music.
Only A Prayer Away Tracklist:

Looking Ahead
It’s a bittersweet time for fans; as Cain tours through 2027, he is preparing to bid a heartfelt farewell to the Journey stage before moving into full-time ministry alongside his wife, Paula White-Cain. However, if this EP is any indication, his musical output is only going to grow deeper and more resonant.
I truly look forward to what’s next from this legendary talent. Whether he’s playing to a sold-out arena or leading worship in Apopka, Florida, Jonathan Cain remains a master of his craft.
