At long last, I’ve made it to Doug Bradley’s Spinechillers Volume 13, the final installment in what has turned out to be a remarkable journey through classic horror literature. Having Doug Bradley as my guide while traversing this enlightening and entertaining landscape of influential prose has been delightful. His distinct voice and immense talent brings gravitas to the subject matter, while his delivery has been both charming and enchanting throughout.

As with previous entries in the Spinechillers series, this triumphant final volume begins with Doug’s well-researched insights into the stories and their authors.

M.R. James’ classic Number 13 starts off this volume with a mystery about a disappearing and reappearing hotel room. Following this is one of the most famous stories by H.P. Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu, composed by Alistair Lock and featuring an outstanding orchestral score. Edgar Allan Poe’s well-known allegory on our mortality, Masque of the Red Death is also included. Having recently seen the film adaptation of Masque of the Red Death, starring Vincent Price, on Shudder, I was intrigued to listen to the original tale. Volume 13 finishes with the final part of Lovecraft’s Reanimator series, The Tomb Legions, and Poe’s 1843-penned poem, The Conqueror Worm.

I highly encourage anyone with an interest in horror, or audiobooks, to buy all 13 volumes of Doug Bradley’s Spinechillers, as they are lovingly crafted and expertly produced.
