In 2024, Microsoft intends to introduce a revamped version of its Xbox Series X console, incorporating fresh design elements and enhanced features. Referred to by the codename “Brooklin,” this unannounced console refresh inadvertently surfaced in recently disclosed FTC v. Microsoft documents.

The redesigned Xbox Series X notably adopts a more cylindrical shape compared to its predecessor and eliminates the disc drive. Confidential internal documents from Microsoft divulge that it boasts a 2TB storage capacity (an increase from the previous 1TB), features a front USB-C port with power delivery capabilities, and introduces an entirely new and more immersive controller.

Microsoft is preparing to unveil their new controller, known internally as “Sebille,” later this year. This controller is set to feature an accelerometer to enable gyro support. Sporting a stylish two-tone color scheme, it will offer a direct connection to the cloud, Bluetooth 5.2 compatibility, and is expected to incorporate an updated “Xbox Wireless 2” connection.

Notable specifications for this controller, as listed by Microsoft, include “precision haptic feedback” and the unique feature of “VCA haptics doubling as speakers.” Additionally, it will boast quieter buttons and thumbsticks, a rechargeable and interchangeable battery, modular thumbsticks, and the convenience of waking it by simply lifting it up.

Within the redesigned Xbox Series X, Microsoft is incorporating several notable enhancements. These include support for Wi-Fi 6E, a Bluetooth 5.2 radio, and a reduction of the existing die size to 6nm, aimed at enhancing efficiency. According to Microsoft’s documentation, the power supply unit (PSU) will also undergo a 15 percent reduction in power consumption.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft is maintaining its target launch price of $499 for the Xbox Series X, despite these improvements.

Microsoft has outlined a roadmap for both the upcoming Xbox Series X console and its accompanying controller. Additionally, there’s a refreshed Xbox Series S variant in the pipeline, equipped with a generous 1TB of storage. Notably, Microsoft recently introduced a refreshed Xbox Series S in a sleek black design, but it appears that another update is on the horizon for 2024. This forthcoming iteration is expected to feature Wi-Fi 6E support and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, and it will also be bundled with the new Xbox controller.

Microsoft’s aspirations for console customization through the Xbox Design Lab program were included in a list of objectives the company aims to fulfill by 2030. It’s important to highlight that, as per the leaked documents, this initiative is currently lacking full funding. Additionally, in the same section, there’s mention of a potential new Elite controller, expected to incorporate the same enhancements as the primary controller refresh.

As for the release schedule, Microsoft tentatively intends to introduce the refreshed Xbox Series S in September of the following year, while the Xbox Series X refresh is slated for a November release.
