What I’m Listening To: Revolution Saints

Revolution Saints’ eponymous debut album is the greatest melodic rock record I’ve heard in nearly 15 years. Not since Journey’s Arrival in 2001 have I heard such an infectious, inspired and memorable collection of rock music. It’s an all-killer-no-filler record that grabs the listener by the collar and doesn’t let go until the vestiges of the final chords dissipate.

A Conversation With Jonathan Cain – Part 2

I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time: Jonathan Cain. In addition to having written or co-written more than 100 songs for Journey,  he has penned numerous hits for The Babys and Bad English, while also maintaining a prolific career as a solo artist. In other words, the quantity, and most importantly, the quality of Jonathan Cain’s musical output is astounding.

This summer Journey is on the road with the Steve Miller Band and the Tower of Power, performing for sold-out crowds across North America. I saw them live in Holmdel, NJ and I plan on seeing them again this year. Check out the tour dates on the band’s official website to see when they’re in your area. The current lineup puts on a phenomenal show that shouldn’t be missed.

The Babys Are Back with I’ll Have Some of That!

The Babys – the popular ’70s and ’80s rock band that topped the charts with hits like “Every Time I Think of You,” “Back On My Feet Again” and “Isn’t It Time” – are back. The band is releasing its first studio album since 1980’s On The Edge. However, there’s been a change in personnel since the last time we heard from this iconic band. John Waite, Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips are not part of the current lineup, and neither is founding member Michael Corby. Waite is enjoying his solo career, Cain is selling out arenas with Journey, Ricky Phillips is rocking out as the bass player for Styx, and Michael Corby hasn’t done anything of note since being fired from the band in 1978.

Rock Done Right: John Waite, Joe Cocker And Michael Des Barres Band

Over the past year, I’ve fallen in love with Spotify, which has allowed me to enjoy artists I know and love as well as discover new ones. While I’m a fan of all kinds of music, melodic rock is my favorite.

Below are three albums I’ve been listening to over and over again:

JOHN WAITE – ROUGH & TUMBLE

John Waite’s newest album, Rough & Tumble is simply awesome. His signature voice is as strong as ever, and his lyrics are quite impressive. I’ve always been a fan of his music, everything from The Babys to Bad English, and, of course, his amazing solo albums. My favorite track from this album is “Evil.” It has a killer guitar riff and a funky groove that will get you moving around the room in no time. But don’t take my word for it, check out the video below.

JOE COCKER – HARD KNOCKS

Joe Cocker has a legendary voice and a unique stage presence. His latest album, Hard Knocks, is filled with a wide variety of music, and it’s all good. One of my favorite tracks is “Thankful” because it’s a soulful number that builds to an outstanding climax featuring a choir and Cocker’s signature scream. As you’ll see from the video below, it’s a spine-chilling song about the importance of being grateful.

MICHAEL DES BARRES BAND – CARNABY STREET

For those of you that read my recent post about Murdoc, you know how I admire the talented Michael Des Barres. Well, his new band just released its first album, Carnaby Street, and it’s excellent. Listening to it conjures up visions of Rod Stewart and The Rolling Stones. If you like no-nonsense rock n’ roll, then this album is for you. While there are many great tracks, one of my favorites is “Please Stay.” It’s a slow, soulful number that’s full of emotion. Below is a live version of the song.
