Masters of Doom, read by Wil Wheaton, is a fascinating journey down memory lane for video game fans like myself who have played the various entries in the blockbuster Doom and Quake franchises. Hearing about the technological advancements and forward-thinking approach employed by the makers of these games, not to mention how large some egos got in the process, was enlightening.

Wil Wheaton’s narration of this Audible Original is exceptionally well done. Not only does his energy and passion come through in every chapter, but he even goes so far as to provide believable vocal imitations, when appropriate, such as Bill Clinton. Wheaton’s charming and affectionate narration of this audiobook makes it that much more enjoyable.

At nearly 13 hours in length, Masters of Doom is a comprehensive look at John Carmack and John Romero. Prior to this book, I didn’t know who either of these individuals were. Now that I do, I have a deeper appreciation for the video games that they created and the hard work required to pull off these ambitious projects. If you’re a fan of video games, you will enjoy this book. If you also grew up in the 1990s, it will be a nostalgic tale that informs and entertains.
