What fear have you conquered? We all get nervous or apprehensive about doing something because of fear. So, which one (or ones) have you conquered? Read on for my thoughts on this question, and feel free to share yours.
When I was a little kid, I’d hide behind my Dad’s leg when he introduced me to someone because I was afraid of meeting them. Now, I can have a conversation with a brick wall.
In my teens and early 20s, I suppose I was most fearful of women because I didn’t know how dates would go. I also went to an all-boys Catholic high school, so that didn’t make finding dates during those years easy. How did I conquer this fear? Allow me to explain.
When I was 16, I started to work at the local grocery store, SuperFresh. I eventually became a cashier. As a cashier, I would talk to everyone I rang up. If an attractive woman were in my line, I’d try to learn as much about her as possible before the end of the order. I’d also strive to tell her about my aspirations beyond the supermarket. Then I’d say, “It’s been great speaking with you, but I can only get to know you so well over 15 items. Can I give you a call sometime?” Nine times out of 10, she’d say “Yes” and give me her number.
I approached conversations with these female customers in a way that was not sleazy. I wouldn’t overtly flirt with them. I would ask questions and offer information about myself. If any flirting was going on, it was subdued because I found that to be most effective. All these dates helped me become more confident about dating. I eventually met my wife in my line at SuperFresh, so you never know what will happen when you conquer your fear.
How about you? What fear have you conquered? How did you do it? If you’re still trying to conquer that fear, it’s never too late. Remember, even the most successful people on the planet are fearful. They are only successful because they don’t allow their fear to consume them. So, don’t let yours consume you.
