Bloganuary: Do You Spend More Time Thinking About the Future or the Past? Why?

Today’s Bloganuary post is based on the prompt: “Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?” Let’s jump in!

People tend to reflect on the past for two reasons: they miss the way things were, or they regret choices they’ve made.

Nostalgia is powerful. It can make people spend a ton of money trying to recreate the glory days of music, video games, or whatever passion they may have. It can also cause people to misremember the way things were because we tend to gloss over the negative aspects of a particular timeframe we fondly recall.

Regret is another swirling stew of emotions. We can beat ourselves up over poor choices. However, with time comes wisdom. At any given moment, most of us attempt to make the best choices we can with the information we have. We’re also emotional beings by nature, so rational behavior isn’t our strong suit.

I embrace nostalgia to a healthy degree, and I do my best to invest no time in regrets because they are an unproductive use of time and energy. Rather than dwell on the past, I always look forward to the future.

I have many happy memories, personally and professionally. However, I believe the best days are yet to come, and the only way for them to arrive is for me to focus on bringing them to fruition.
