Sometimes, the best pop culture recommendations come from the most unexpected places. In my case, it wasn’t an algorithmic trailer or a glossy film review that finally pushed me into Bikini Bottom—it was a college classroom.
Last summer, while teaching a public speaking course at Drexel University, one of my students delivered an entire presentation dedicated to SpongeBob SquarePants. Her sheer passion, encyclopedic knowledge, and contagious excitement for the character stuck with me long after the term wrapped. In early August, I headed over to AMC to catch The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants as part of their AMC Fan Faves program. Walking into the theater, I realized this wasn’t just my first time seeing SpongeBob on the big screen—it was my very first time watching a feature-length SpongeBob film period.
It turned out to be an absolute blast. From the opening moments, the film was visually striking, bursting with vibrant color, expressive animation, and creative visual gags that made the theatrical scale feel earned. More importantly, it was genuinely funny and engaging from start to finish. The humor worked on multiple levels, effortlessly balancing off-the-wall absurdity with smart, fast-paced comedic timing that kept the energy high throughout.
With fresh eyes, I finally understand why the yellow sponge has held such a dedicated grip on audiences for decades. It’s hard to beat a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be and delivers it with so much unbridled joy. If you’ve been on the fence or just haven’t revisited the franchise in years, it’s well worth the dive.
