Michael Des Barres is one of the most charismatic and fascinating people I’ve ever met, so when I heard a documentary was coming out about his life I was extremely interested in watching it. The film, entitled Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me To Be?, has already appeared at the San Francisco Documentary Film Festival and the Macon Film Festival, where it was universally praised.
Next up, on August 13, is an LA screening at the Don’t Knock The Rock Film Festival. This event is a special one because it will feature a Q&A with the Director and Michael Des Barres himself. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend you attend this event. More information can be found here. For those of you that read my three-part interview with Michael Des Barres, you know that his career has been a varied and prolific one. He’s a modern-day renaissance man. Not only is Des Barres a consummate actor, he’s one of the most underrated musicians I’ve had the pleasure of seeing perform live. Whether it was in Silverhead, Detective, Chequered Past, or his solo work, Des Barres has sung with soul and rocked as hard as any musician on the planet.
This documentary is a fitting tribute to Des Barres’ artistry, infectious positivity and underappreciated talents. Whether you know who he is or you’ve never heard of him before, go out of your way to watch Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me To Be? It’s a wonderfully inspiring journey that will leave you smiling in the end.
This film won BEST IN SHOW at the 2015 Macon Film Festival. Excellent film.
Thanks for sharing. That’s great news!
Is there any idea of when it might be released on DVD?
That’s a great question. I have no idea. I’ll ask Michael and if he responds, I’ll let you know what he says.
I emailed Michael Des Barres about this and here is his response: “It’s not completed yet michael I’ll let you know.”
3 years later and I’m still hoping to see this someday…
