Hulu: Books of Blood

Clive Barker’s Books of Blood is now available on Hulu. Released on October 7, this nearly two-hour movie weaves together three tales of terror from Barker’s seminal work.

I’m a huge Clive Barker fan, so I was eager to check this out. I met the man last year, and he was delightful. I own many of his books in physical, eBook, and audiobook formats, and the Hellraiser franchise is one of my favorite series of movies in the horror genre.

This new Books of Blood movie on Hulu isn’t the first time his breakout series of books has been adapted for film. In 2009 Book of Blood was released to mixed reviews. It’s currently available to stream for free on Prime Video, if you have an Amazon Prime membership, so I plan on watching that one soon too.

This new Hulu version of Books of Blood is a slow burn. Don’t expect a bunch of jump scares at breakneck speed. It’s more creepy than horrific. However, the horror dial is turned up significantly as the movie progresses. As Executive Producer, Barker had a direct hand in the making of this film and he seems proud of it — based on what he’s said publicly.

Books of Blood is enjoyable enough. It didn’t rock my world but it kept me intrigued the whole way through. Three stories are told and they eventually overlap. There are many twists and turns that are often too hard to make sense of, but it’s fun nonetheless. If you go in with low expectations and don’t overthink it, Books of Blood is a good way to kill some time. And as the master of horror Clive Barker once wrote, “Everybody is a book of blood; wherever we’re opened, we’re red.”
