What Happened When I Finally Read Thich Nhat Hanh

Over the past several months, as I’ve started exploring Buddhism, it has felt almost impossible to scroll through social media without encountering Thich Nhat Hanh. His gentle demeanor, clips of him walking with effortless presence, and bite-sized quotes on mindfulness seem to populate every corner of the internet. It’s easy to absorb those short, uplifting snippets and think you understand his message, but sitting down with an entire body of his work is a completely different experience.

Being Peace was my very first time reading one of his books, and to put it simply, it was incredible.

At 160 pages, it’s a remarkably slim book. You could easily breeze through it in a single afternoon, yet the content carries a profound, resonant weight that lingers long after you finish. Thich Nhat Hanh doesn’t hide behind complex metaphysical jargon or dogmatic rules. Instead, he dismantles our everyday anxieties with disarming simplicity, showing how peace isn’t some lofty political resolution or an elusive state reserved for monks on mountaintops. It’s something cultivated right now—in the way we wash dishes, answer an irritating phone call, or simply take our next breath.

I experienced this one through the audiobook, and choosing that format turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in a while. It’s narrated by Edoardo Ballerini, whose calm, grounded cadence felt like an antidote to a busy mind. His voice gave every teaching the breathing room it deserved, turning my morning walks and evening commutes into quiet pockets of genuine stillness.

What struck me most was how universal the wisdom felt. You don’t need to identify as a Buddhist, wear prayer beads, or have any spiritual background whatsoever to be moved by this book. If you live in the modern world and occasionally feel overwhelmed by its noise, tension, and pace, these pages speak directly to you. It’s a reminder that if we cannot embody peace within ourselves, we have very little chance of offering it to the people around us.

This isn’t a one-and-done title that gets relegated to a shelf to gather dust. Being Peace has officially earned a permanent spot in my rotation—a book I know I will listen to and read multiple times whenever life starts to feel a bit too chaotic. If you’ve been on the fence or only know him through social media quotes, do yourself a favor and pick this up. You’ll be glad you gave yourself the pause.
