Don’t Let the Trailer Fool You: The End of Oak Street Is Better Than You Think

I walked into the AMC on August 18 with genuinely low expectations.

If you’ve seen the marketing for The End of Oak Street, you probably know why. The trailers made the whole setup look downright goofy—almost like a bargain-bin Jurassic Park knockoff trading on nostalgia and cheap creature tropes. I fully expected to spend two hours chuckling at cheesy dialogue, predictable set pieces, and an overworked CGI budget.

Instead, I walked out completely surprised. It’s actually a really good movie.

Tequila, Toothpicks, and Two Guns: Hard Boiled Revisited

If you look up the word “cool” in the dictionary, you won’t find a definition. You’ll find a picture of Chow Yun-Fat sliding down a banister with a toothpick in his mouth and a Beretta in each hand.

Released in 1992 as director John Woo’s farewell love letter to Hong Kong cinema before his move to Hollywood, Hard Boiled is widely considered the peak of the “Heroic Bloodshed” genre. And standing tall at the center of this hurricane of bullets and broken glass is the incomparable Chow Yun-Fat.
