I had the honor of seeing her live twice — once on Broadway and another time in Washington, D.C. — and I met her backstage on March 28, 2015. This September Jean Smart turns 70, and 2021 is one of the greatest years in her illustrious career. Not only did she play a phenomenal role as the mother of Kate Winslet’s character in HBO’s Marre of Easttown, an exquisitely crafted crime drama replete with dark humor unpredictable twists — but she’s also absolutely killing it as Deborah Vance in Hacks, an HBO Max Original. The last couple episodes of Hacks were released today, and two days ago the show got renewed for a second season. If you haven’t watched Hacks yet, please do. For more than 30 years, David Vance has worked with some of the biggest names and brands in the world: Revlon, Rolex, Sony, Coca-Cola, just to name a few. You’ve seen his photography in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and Men’s Health, as well as other top-tier publications; and he’s photographed countless celebrities, some of which include Bea Arthur, Johnny Mathis and Dionne Warwick.

When I was in my last year as an undergrad at Temple University, I decided to take a course called TV Criticism. It was fascinating, and it was also the first time I was introduced to Lost, which is now one of my favorite shows of all time.
For my final paper, I decided to write about what I consider to be the greatest sitcom ever, The Golden Girls. For the purpose of this blog post, I rewrote some parts and cleaned it up. Thankfully, I’m a better writer now than I was four years ago. Enjoy!
