Thomas B. Sawyer is the former Head Writer of Murder, She Wrote. Before breaking into television, he was an illustrator and worked for Stan Lee at Marvel. Tom is a good friend, and I had the chance to catch up with him to discuss his diverse career as an artist, TV writer, and author. We talked about what it was like writing for Angela Lansbury in her iconic role as Jessica Fletcher, the early days of the comic book industry, and much more. I had the honor of seeing her live twice — once on Broadway and another time in Washington, D.C. — and I met her backstage on March 28, 2015. I read approximately 50 books a year and my reading list is even longer. Below are a few of the books I’m reading or have already read this spring, along with their official synopses.
Thomas B. Sawyer has led an extraordinary life. With a name like Tom Sawyer, how could he not?! From illustrating comic strips to being the head writer of Murder, She Wrote, Tom’s autobiography, The Adventures of the Real Tom Sawyer, is a delightful memoir that takes the reader through all of the interesting moments in Tom’s life. Punctuated with humor and wit, reading this book felt like I was having a cup of coffee with Tom while he told me fascinating stories about his impressive career. If you’re a lover of writing, film, TV, or simply entertainment, Tom’s autobiography is absolutely worth reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I believe you will too.
My to-read list is never ending. However, there are three books that are near the top of the list and I think you should check them out.
There are many great writing books to choose from. But if you’re an aspiring fiction writer, below are three that should be at the top of your list.
Last week I attended ThrillerFest IX in New York City. This annual event is held by the terrific organization International Thriller Writers, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. While at ThrillerFest IX, I had the opportunity to attend FanFest, a portion of the week-long event where fans get to meet and spend time with a multitude of authors over cocktails. Picture it: There’s a large room with Lee Child, Michael Connelly, David Morrell, and countless others at tables waiting to sign your book, take photos with you and chat. It was a great way to cap off my week at ThrillerFest IX. Below are several photos of myself and authors whom I spent time with during the conference or at FanFest.
Last week I saw and met Night Ranger. I also saw and met Foreigner and Don Felder, in addition to seeing Styx perform. How could I possibly top this? Well, this week I’m going to New York City to spend time with and learn from some of the greatest writers in the world at ThrillerFest IX.
Summer is almost upon us and it’s one of my favorite seasons. What’s not to love? If you’re a music fan, there are a million concerts to go to. If you’re a foodie, you can eat outdoors at a myriad of restaurants. And, of course, if you’re a book lover there are numerous titles you can read in bed, on the beach or at the airport. To help you decide which books are worth reading, I’m going to share with you a few titles that I’m either currently reading or will be reading very soon.
