Those who know me well are aware of my love for audiobooks. Like a lot of people, I lead a busy life and being able to listen to a book, as opposed to having to sit down and read it, means I can read a whole lot more. And it means that I can make mundane activities – brushing my teeth, walking to work, getting dressed – more enjoyable and productive. Therefore, the majority of the books I’m going to read this year will be audiobooks.
Night Ranger’s 11th studio album, High Road, comes out June 10 and I’ve been listening to an advance copy for the past couple days. I’m happy to report that Night Ranger fans, and those who enjoy great rock music, will love this album. In addition to having a gorgeous album cover, High Road is full of upbeat, guitar-driven rock songs, along with a few ballads and an instrumental track for good measure.
My girlfriend and I went to see a new play at the Penn’s Landing Playhouse called Dear Mom. This is the second show that I’ve seen at this theater – the first was You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up! – and it was terrific. Dear Mom tells the story of a mother and daughter whose relationship is a mixture of love, bitterness and disappointment. There’s plenty of humor along the way and I shed more than one tear during the play’s more serious moments.

What It’s About
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of KISS‘ debut album: KISS. The band is celebrating the occasion in myriad ways, one of which is by releasing the 40-track compilation KISS 40. This set includes one track from every major album release (i.e., studio, Alive and compilations), as well as three live selections from the 2000-era and an unreleased demo from 1977.

A few days ago I received a copy of The Collector of Dying Breaths by the immensely talented M.J. Rose, and I look forward to reading it soon. So far, this book has received excellent reviews on Amazon and Goodreads with people calling it “a richly detailed and imaginative novel” and “as beautifully evocative as previous entries in the [Reincarnationist] series.”
I just finished reading a book that came out the year I was born: 1985. Entitled Laguna Heat, it’s the debut novel by T. Jefferson Parker. I met the author last July at ThrillerFest and immediately liked him after seeing his hour-long interview with D.P. Lyle. This interview provided me with insight into Parker’s writing style, motivations and interesting behind-the-scenes information about his impressive body of work. I picked up a copy of Iron River while I was there so he could autograph it, but I decided that the first book of his I would read was Laguna Heat, mainly because I think the title sounds great.

Whether it was being the lead singer of The Babys or Bad English or topping the charts with his #1 smash hit “Missing You,” John Waite’s voice has remained unmistakable and his music endures.
