Book Update: Spike TV President Kevin Kay

I’ve now done more than 60 interviews for my books about the history of TNA/IMPACT Wrestling, including an interview tonight that I conducted with former Spike TV President Kevin Kay that lasted more than two hours. We talked about many topics, including the following: whether or not Spike TV paid for Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff, among others, to join TNA, if Spike TV ever thought about buying TNA, how Viacom really felt about TNA, if Jeff Jarrett was a better leader than Dixie Carter, and a whole lot more. This was one of the most enlightening conversations I’ve had so far, and it’s going to make for exceptionally compelling content for both of my books. Keep it right here for many more updates to come!

Book Update: Rob Van Dam

Today I may have conducted the biggest interview for my books about the history of TNA/IMPACT Wrestling yet: Rob Van Dam! Mr. Monday Night talked to me about his two runs in the promotion, including stories about Hulk Hogan, Sting, Sami Callihan, Jeff Hardy, Paul Heyman, and much more. RVD is the only man to have held the ECW, WWE, and TNA World Heavyweight Championships, yet he comes off as the super cool dude we all know and love on TV. I couldn’t be more grateful to have had the chance to speak with this wrestling icon, and I look forward to sharing his stories with you in my books.

TNA IMPACT Wrestling Annual Books

So far, in its nearly 20-year existence, there have only been three official books published by TNA/IMPACT Wrestling and they are the 2012, 2013, and 2014 editions of The Official TNA IMPACT Wrestling Annual. All three books were released in Europe, not the USA, but I got copies of them for a reasonable price on eBay. Below are three reviews providing you with a detailed look at each book.

Movie Review: The Wrestler

Today, I watched The Wrestler for the first time since it came out nearly 11 years ago. It is still a fantastic movie. It’s very much the pro wrestling version of Rocky Balboa, an equally fabulous piece of cinema that is gritty, authentic, and overflowing with emotion.

WCW: The Ultimate Guide

Back in 2000, DK, the same company that brings us incredible WWE books, published WCW: The Ultimate Guide. This slim hardback book was a precursor to the WWE Encyclopedia. It compiles wrestler biographies, information about moves, events, TV shows, PPVs, and more. It’s an interesting look at a company that, just one year later, would be bought out by Vince McMahon’s WWE. Below is a video review, where I show you every single page in this out-of-print book. Enjoy!

WCW Nitro Author Tells All

Nitro by Guy Evans is the definitive book on Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling (WCW). At nearly 600 pages, it is the most comprehensive chronicle of what went right and what went wrong with WCW. I had the opportunity to speak with the author at length about his wonderful book, as well as Guy’s thoughts on modern-day wrestling, who his favorite wrestler is, and more.

Book Review: Wrestling With Joeylicious

Wrestling With Joeylicious is a novel written by Drummer/Actor/Writer/Producer Joey Cassata and Christopher Lynn. I’m a huge wrestling fan and when I saw this book promoted on my Facebook timeline I thought to myself, “Who is this Joeylicious guy?” I assumed he was some independent wrestler I never heard of. I figured if he had written a book about his career, he must be somewhat well known. Then I saw that my buddies Matt and Cameron were about to interview him for Completely Damaged. So, I decided to give this book a go. And I even had the opportunity to interview Joey Cassata too. Stay tuned for my interview with Joey. Until then, let’s dive into his book: Wrestling With Joeylicious.

The Squared Circle by David Shoemaker

The Squared Circle by David Shoemaker was released in 2013, and it examines the careers of deceased professional wrestlers. Not exactly the most uplifting premise, yet the author tackles different eras, promotions, and grapplers with aplomb. Almost all of the big-name wrestlers who are no longer with us are featured in this book, including Chris Benoit, Owen Hart, Brian Pillman, and more.

Remembering Road Warrior Animal

On September 23 I woke up and read a tweet from Hulk Hogan saying that Animal, one half of The Road Warriors, the most successful and influential tag team in wrestling history, had passed away. Considering he was only 60, I was shocked. Fans and wrestlers the world over reacted with an outpouring of respect and sadness for the loss of one of the all-time greats.

Pro Wrestling Demystified: You Know It’s Fake, Right?

“You know it’s fake, right?” These are the words uttered by people who don’t understand professional wrestling. How do I respond when people ask this ill-informed question? I say, “You know Darth Vader is fake, right?” Or, “You know the characters in This Is Us aren’t real, right?” Professional wrestling might as well be Rodney Dangerfield because it doesn’t get any respect. Despite the fact that professional wrestling has been around for more than 100 years, some people feel the need to cast judgment and view it as holding no redeemable value. I’ve been a fan of professional wrestling my entire life, and I’m proud of that fact. I’ve derived a plethora of value from my fandom, established friendships because of it, and had amazing experiences along the way. Professional wrestling is just as valid a form of entertainment as anything you’ll find on film, in print, on stage, or even on a sports field. This is the first in a series of posts where I’m going to take the time to help demystify professional wrestling in an effort to help those who aren’t fans understand why millions of us are.
